What are SEMH needs?
Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs are a type of special educational needs in which children and young people have severe difficulties in managing their emotions and behaviour. They often show inappropriate responses and feelings to situations.
This means that they may have trouble in building and maintaining relationships with peers and adults; they can also struggle to engage with learning and to cope in classroom without additional strategies and interventions. Children with SEMH will often feel anxious, scared and misunderstood.
Recent figures estimate that around 150,000 children in mainstream and special schools are suffering from SEMH.
As a result, SEMH plays an integral part to Robin Hood as we understand the importance of nurturing the wellbeing of all children.

Our Social and Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) support provides a safe and caring environment where our children can develop essential skills to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships and boost their confidence. Through personalised interventions, group activities and one-on-one support, we help children overcome challenges, strengthen their resilience, and create a foundation for lifelong mental and emotional health. Our goal is to ensure every child feels valued, supported and empowered to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
We have an in-school SEMH room (called The Den) where children access targeted interventions to support their SEMH needs.

Hi, I'm Miss Mills! I am the EYFS Lead and Reception teacher but I am also a qualified SENDCo. As part of my role as Deputy SENDCo, I take the lead on all things SEMH at Robin Hood!
Hello, I am Mrs Smith! Previously, I was full time class teacher at Robin Hood in Reception but now I work Monday, Wednesday and Friday delivering SEMH interventions across school and taking the lead on family support and attendance.
Hello, I am Miss McLoughlin! I teach in Year 2 but I am also a trauma-informed practitioner (Level 5 Diploma). I work alongside Miss Mills and Mrs Smith to support some of our children on the SEMH register.
