What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is a term used to describe a sum of money that schools are allocated for children who fall into specific categories. The amount varies depending on a variety of factors. The money is used by school to support these children and improve their educational outcomes, bringing it into line with that of their peers.
Children who are Pupil Premium are entitled to Free School Meals (FSM).
Which Children are eligible to be Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium funding is awarded to school for children who fall into the following categories:
- pupils who are recorded as eligible for free school meals, or have been recorded as eligible in the past 6 years (referred to as ‘Ever 6 FSM’)
- children previously looked after by a local authority or other state care, including children adopted from state care or equivalent from outside England and Wales
· children of Service personnel
· children of families who are considered to be on a low income
Pupils who are eligible for the pupil premium need to be aged four and over, so reception to Year 11, in a maintained school.
How do we use Pupil Premium?
Pupil premium funding is awarded straight to school. It is not a personal budget for individuals, and schools do not have to spend it on the pupils who have qualified for it. It can be used for a variety of things, such as:
· whole class interventions, where the eligible child is a part of and will benefit with their peers
· to support other pupils with identified needs, such as those who have or have had a social worker, or who act as a carer
What do I do if I think my child(ren) may be eligible for Pupil Premium?
