Foundation Stage

Nursery & Reception at Robin Hood

Children learning in Nursery and Reception classes are known as the Early Years.  We follow the national Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. Robin Hood is a two form entry school and has 60 children in the Reception phase and 53 children in Nursery.


Nursery offers different sessions for children. We provide 15 hour places for children (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday am) or (Wednesday pm/Thursday/Friday).  We also offer some 30 hour places for children (Monday-Friday). Both of our Reception classes have 30 children. Across Foundation Stage we value the ideas and opinions of our cohort and strive to ensure they develop skills of independence and resilience. We aim to develop children into curious, creative and confident learners. We provide opportunities for children to come together to share their experiences and have fun. Our children are happy at Robin Hood.


We value our parents and carers and work alongside them to provide extended transition opportunities for children, invite them to join us during learning sessions, provide regular weekly information and reassure them that their child is well cared for and happy at school.  We recognise that a strong home/school link contributes positively to children’s development and we are always happy to hear about children’s learning experiences out of school. We facilitate two parent consultations across the year and are always happy to make additional individual appointments. Parents are invited into school to celebrate their children’s achievements.

Environment and Curriculum

Our curriculum is created around six half termly topics which have a balance of child-initiated and adult-led learning. Our aim is to incorporate the development of key skills and promote questioning, creativity and deep learning. Using carefully selected books we have a variety of carefully planned learning opportunities which allow children to explore, create and learn through exciting, stimulating, interactive and open ended resources. We have a positive and caring ethos and encourage children to develop their confidence, work collaboratively and support each other. Experienced staff are always on hand to encourage thinking and promote questioning.

We are a positive and professional team with real passion and enthusiasm for early years. We aim to communicate and work together with parents and carers to support our children’s development.
