Robin Hood Primary School

"Success is in the journey, not the destination; we are all learners"

FRENCH AT ROBIN HOOD

The ability to speak another language is an extraordinarily valuable skill, particularly in the age of information. At Robin Hood Primary School our aim is to plant the seeds of interest in Modern Foreign Languages as a whole with the view to growing greenhouses for the future. More so than ever, our children are international citizens, so our aim is to start to provide them with the appropriate communication tools, as well as preparing them for the high-school curriculum.

THE INTENT OF OUR FRENCH CURRICULUM

At Robin Hood we strive to deliver the building blocks for relevant and engaging conversational French. Studies have consistently proved that regularity and relevance are key to success in learning a foreign language as our programme of study reflects that. Gone are the days of telling people that you went to the park in the holidays and asking for directions to the library, our learning reflects an updated, progressive and modern approach, giving children the skills required to converse in a wide variety of contemporaneous situations. Our aim is to help pupils maximise their ability to communicate effectively with people from other countries and to understand their cultures, attitudes and customs.

HOW OUR FRENCH CURRICULUM IS IMPLEMENTED

French is delivered at Robin Hood with an exceptionally high standard to ensure that children are exposed to as much of the spoken language as they can be. All are actively encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities to boost their listening skills, conversational building blocks and vocabulary:

  • Words – teaching pupils to practise the meaning, form and sound of words together.

  • Phrases – teaching pupils how to construct simple correct sentences to learn, share and give information in French.

  • Engagement - encouraging children to immerse themselves in the use of the language to communicate effectively.

  • Listening and speaking – linking listening and speaking to help pupils speak more accurately and authentically (accent and all!)

  • Cultural knowledge and contact – giving pupils the opportunity to learn all about France, their food and customs.

THE IMPACT OF OUR FRENCH CURRICULUM

The advent of The Information Age and The Internet has already precipitated a shift towards a truly global society. An essential part of this for our children will be the ability to communicate in different languages. Our Programme of study at Robin Hood provides the children with the appropriate exposure to a wide variety of language and cultural experiences with a view to foster a love for languages and a practical implementation of the skills they learn throughout the year.

FRENCH CULTURAL CAPITAL

Building cultural capital is the core of teaching MFL and French at Robin Hood. Our aim is to expose children to a wide range of French culture, food, customs and mannerisms, building their status as international citizens and fostering a truly global attitude.
