Robin Hood Primary School

"Success is in the journey, not the destination; we are all learners"

THE INTENT OF OUR ART AND DESIGN CURRICULUM

At Robin Hood Primary School, we are dedicated to the teaching of art and design. We see this as a fundamental part of school life. We are committed to provide an art curriculum that encourages creativity and experimentation. We trust that by developing our pupil’s art and design skills we are positively effecting children’s home and school lives. The techniques learnt can transfer and be used in other subject areas. Therefore, art and design technology is a means to support learning across school in a range of ways.

HOW OUR ART AND DESIGN CURRICULUM IS IMPLEMENTED

In accordance with the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Produce imaginative work that encourages exploring new ideas and recording their experiences.

  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpting, craft and design techniques.

  • Evaluate and analyse their art and design work using suitable language.

  • Learn about the history of art and great artists or designers of past and present.

Class teachers are responsible for the teaching and learning of art and design although there will be times when artist or helpers will be involved in teaching the topic. We will take on any opportunity to help develop links with outside agencies and experts to help enrich our art curriculum. We will display and celebrate our pupil’s work in our classrooms and across school so our children feel proud of what they have created.

THE IMPACT OF ART AND DESIGN CURRICULUM

Our children enjoy expressing themselves through the medium of art and design technology. They are keen to learn new techniques and use them in a wide variety of work. The pupil’s outcomes often help them to express their feelings and emotions, as well as show their knowledge and understanding in history, geography and science. They are encouraged to take part in different competitions and events, which they enjoy and thrive in. Through their art and design work, the children are able to reach out into the community. Our art club has worked on commissions for the Beechwood Dental Practice, Stanhope Community Centre, the Children's Centre at Rodillian and further afield like Tropical World.  We also have pupil’s work permanently displayed at Lotherton Hall and Holling Mills.

ART AND DESIGN CULTURAL CAPITAL

We build Cultural Capital in our art lessons by offering students the opportunity to engage with the world around them. Embedded in our art curriculum is the wide range of work from artists and designers from a vast spectrum of background, genders, ethnicities and beliefs. We share other cultures and ideas, analyse artefacts and investigate historical events linked to art and design. Cultural awareness is developed through our creative hands on lessons. Through our artistic journey, we have opportunities to express our thoughts and feelings based on what we have discovered together.
