Miss Quirke

Year 6 Teacher

Welcome to our Year 4 class page. Pupils in year 4 enjoy a variety of topics to inspire their learning. In writing, pupils take inspiration from books such as Iron Man to write in a variety of genres. In non-fiction, they write about their own experiences such as their 3-day residential trip to Lineham Farm in Eccup. In poetry, children enjoy writing nonsense poetry based on the New Vestments by Edwards Lear.

In reading, pupils develop their fluency and develop their comprehension through a range of skills in fiction and non-fiction texts. In addition, pupils enjoy sharing a class book, which provides some great opportunities for questioning and discussion. Pupils also enjoy reading for pleasure and select books that they can read at home and in school.

In maths, pupils work hard to learn their times tables up to 12 x 12. Pupils learn new strategies for the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and apply these into a range of problem solving and reasoning questions. Pupils are introduced to new place value concepts such as decimals and four digit numbers.

In art, pupils enjoy opportunities through events such as my masterpiece, which enables pupils’ artwork to framed and displayed in a school art gallery. In PSHE & RE, pupils spend time understanding British Values, understanding others, how to be a good citizen and how to keep ourselves safe. In music, we use CHARANGA, which enables pupils to develop their understanding of rhythm, pulse and pitch through their own compositions using instruments. In history, pupils learn about their local area and compare and contrast how crime and punishment has changed over time. In geography, pupils learn about earthquakes, volcanoes, rivers, and water cycle.

In science, pupils learn about our changing world and learn how to identify trees based on their leaves. They then investigate changing states followed by exploring how sound waves are made. Pupils finally learn about human impact and take part in a local litter survey. They then use this data to analyse the materials found and write a conclusion based on their results.

In PE, pupils use REAL PE for indoor sessions and focus on physical and personal skills in their indoor session. In outdoor PE, pupils learn skills such as throwing and catching and apply these into invasion games. Pupils take part in a Sports Day usually held at The John Charles Centre for Sport in the summer term. Weekly swimming lessons also take place at Rothwell Leisure Centre.
